To sacrifice between love and faith - 1

This week is a week in which the weekend is going to be a celebration for Muslim community in most part of the world, Ied Adha or Ied Sacrifice. There is a divine story behind this celebration. It is in relation to the story of Prophet Ibrahim pbuh and his beloved son Prophet Ismail pbuh. This a story of love and faith.

In those old days, it was prophet Ibrahim pbuh had been old (about 80years) and had no son not from the two wives he got. When Allah granted him with a son (his first son) that he named Ismail pbuh, he was very happy thus loved his son very much.

But then the divine message instructed him to separate himself from his beloved son and his second wive, Hagar. Fully trusted the wisdom and the sustenance of the Most High, he left them in the Valley of Bakka (Mecca) under the care of Allah. Some reference said that he left them there for about 9 years.

After 9 years he came back to see them and found the place that used to be a deserted valley in which no one lived there had turned into a small community. This was after Hagar found the spring of zam-zam under the feet of his baby Ismail. During those quality time he had with his family, he taught them the words of Tawhid. Those words had strengthened the iiman (faith) and virtues of his family as well as gave him joy of a family life in the valley.

Until one day, there came another divine message through his dream. He was told to sacrifice his son by slaughtering him. Because it had something to do with his son, he consulted his wife Hagar about the dream. Knowing it was a divine message, she could only submitted herself and held on to her iiman to Allah. She trusted Allah fully and loved Allah more than his own son to allow the divine message to be executed.

Having that agreement from his wife, he then told his son about the dream and got his answer. Qur'an has inscribed their state in facing the situation beautifully in Ash Shaffat: " And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast. " [QS 37: 102]

In receiving the acceptance of his son, Prophet Ibrahim pbuh executed the divine massage without any further hesitation. He had chosen imaan out of humanly and family love. Regardless his love to his beloved son, one that he had been waited for as long as he could remember as his wish-come-true-progeny, his submission to Allah's command had convinced his heart and mind much much stronger to do what seemed to be non-sensible, out-of-mind action. And again Qur'an related his submission " And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him, "O Ibrahim, You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. " [QS 37: 103 - 105]

Because of their submission in fulfilling the divine vision, they both were praised to be the obedience servants and their names and their action were remembered by the later generation. Something they never thought they would get in facing the trial. For those experience was "Indeed, this was the clear trial." [QS 37: 106] for them both. Thus Allah had granted him " And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice, And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations: "Peace upon Ibrahim." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, he was of Our believing servants. " [QS 37: 107 - 111]
